- More expansion supposition by Pete Fiutak of College Football News. I don't think the teams are all in the correct places but I agree with Fiutak on the landscape of college football moving forward: five conferences with 16 teams (each conference is split into two divisions) each making up a 'first division" of the BCS. Then a "mid-level" tier, made up of the schools excluded from the "super-conferences", that has bowl tie-ins & sends one team to a BCS bowl. This paves the way for an eventual 8 team playoff system. The schedule would look like this: 7 inter-division conference games (you play every team in your division). Two rotating conference games against the other division (these games could also be used to preserve traditional rivalries). Two out-of-conference games. That's an eleven game regular season. If you make it to your conference championship game that's game 12 - if not, and you qualify, your bowl game is game 12. Then you have the 5 "super-conference" champions plus the champion of the "mid-level" tier. Add two at-large teams from the "Big 5" (as determined by the polls which keeps them relevant) and you have an eight team playoff. Seedings determined by the polls. Not too far-fetched but we're not holding our breathe.....
- There's no question the ACC is at a crossroads with all the expansion talk right now. But perhaps the most important hurdle facing the league right now is the negotiation of a new TV contract as the current one expires at the end of the 2010-11 season. The importance of a new TV deal can't be understated. Boston College blog BC Interruption takes a good look at what we might expect from a monetary perspective from a new TV deal while Michael Felder at In The Bleachers takes an in-depth look at the ramifications & importance of the new TV deal. We've said it many times, college football in 2010 is an arms race & right now the ACC is in negotiations to see if we'll be fighting with assault rifles or BB guns in future years.
- It's STAT WEEK over at VPISU blog Gobbler Country. Some very interesting stuff over there including offensive & defensive efficiency stats & last season's offensive turnover rates. I was immediately struck by our turnover rate & attribute much of our success last year to the fact we simply didn't give the ball away. Ten total turnovers on the year is impressive (one per every 64 plays) but to think we only lost the ball once every 88 times we ran it shows a dramatic improvement from 2008/9. Also take a look at the number of plays we ran in 2009. 50 more than our closest competitor. Time of possession & keeping our suspect defense off the field played a major role in our success. And yes, the defensive stats are painful so you've been warned.....
- A good article from the AJC on offensive grad assistant & B-backs coach Craig Candeto. Candeto is now the second of CPJ's former Navy QB's on staff (Lamar Owens). We had several chances during Spring practice to chat with Candeto & he seems a perfect fit at Tech & a terrific addition to the staff.
- The AJC also has an article on QB recruit Vad Lee out of North Carolina. I've seen film on Lee & he would be a great fit in our offense. Plus "Vad the Impaler" would never get old....
- Last & certainly not least......Gucci Mane is free!!!!!! Yes, indeed, the Atlanta rapper was released from prison at midnight yesterday. We've been waiting anxiously 'cause we know some ho's out there need slappin'.......
