- Jason Peters & Brandon Watts returned to practice yesterday after brief absences. Watts was a full participant while Peters wore a red no contact jersey. It's just precautionary with Peters so no worries.
- True freshman defensive end Denzel McCoy will miss the next couple of weeks with an undisclosed illness. Out of respect for his wishes, we won't disclose the illness but it shouldn't have any long term effects & he'll be fine. McCoy was slated to redshirt so this shouldn't effect us on the field.
- Rod Sweeting continues to push Dominique Reese at CB opposite Mario Butler while Isaiah Johnson & Jeremiah Attaochu continue to impress amongst the freshman.
- safety Fred Holton, a freshman from Thomasville, will have a chance to play on special teams this year.
On to the rest.....
- Seems as if more & more teams, both in high school & at the collegiate level, are turning to the spread option offense. Three schools in the Southern Conference will run the spread option this season, Wofford, The Citadel, & Georgia Southern under former Tech assistant & CPJ disciple Jeff Monken. The proliferation of our offense can only help us, particularly in recruiting....P.S. when will they ever get it right? The triple option is a play within our offense, the spread option is our offense.....
- The NCAA's investigation of North Carolina continues & seems to be gaining momentum. Yesterday former Tar Heel defensive tackle Cam Thomas admitted that former Heel & current 49er (and Gary Wichard client) Kentwan Balmer paid for Thomas & Marvin Austin, the central figure in the NCAA probe, to take a trip to California. That is "preferential treatment" according to the NCAA and it's illegal. While Carolina as an institution may get off relatively lightly, Austin's eligibility is very much up in the air as well as WR Greg Little. We're hoping the NCAA preserves the eligibility of TJ Yates.....
- Chris Brown of Smart Football, he of the big brain & much knowledge, has a terrific piece on understanding pass coverage & attacking it. This is a MUST READ for those interested in what our pass defense will look like this year & how teams will attack us. There's a very good chance you will see us employ all of those coverages at one time or another this year.
- Things really haven't started out so well for Jimbo Fisher down at Florida State. First LB Nigel Carr goes all klepto while Fisher is at ACC media days. Great timing, for sure. Then WR Jarmon Fortson, a player of great ability & perhaps their most dangerous downfield threat, gets the boot for "undisclosed reasons" (rumors abound he failed multiple drug tests; like Dre & Snoop said, "smoke weed everyday....."). Now defensive tackle Moses McCray & RB Tavares Pressley will miss the year with torn ACL's. While FSU is deep at RB & can withstand the loss of Pressley, McCray's loss will hinder an already thin Seminole defensive line.
- Turner Gill's Kansas Jayhawks, our week two opponent, continue to be decimated by injuries. This time it's LB Huldon Tharp, out for the year with a foot injury. That's three defenders now lost for the year along with two offensive linemen. Hope the boys in Lawrence are ready for an ass-whipping on September 11th because I think it may get ugly.......
We'll have the running back preview later on today......
