- those dastardly bureaucrats at the NCAA have gone the route of the NFL (No Fun League) and have made taunting a live ball penalty beginning in 2010. What's this mean? Well, in short, it means that taunting can get your touchdown called back. Umm, let's just say bullshit! Ron Cherry already controls far too much of our destiny, giving him this much power is disastrous. Mr. College Football, Tony Barnhart, likes the new rule. But he's old & will probably be drinking a sloe gin fizz tonight after his cotillion. Spencer Hall @ EDSBS agrees & got Voltaire & Firehorse to debate the issue. We admire the cut of that stallion's jib. Matt Hinton aka Doc Saturday looks at some game changing plays that would be affected by the new rule. Sweet bureaucracy, we love the NCAA! It's scary to think such an awesome moment could be ruined by a ridiculous penalty:
For the record had this new rule been in place last season & a penalty have been called I would have leapt my fat ass onto the field & dismembered the entire refereeing crew one-by-one with my bare hands.....
- As an addendum to the previous segment the NCAA has also outlawed the use of the wedge as a blocking technique on kickoffs & has also outlawed any form of message on a players eye-black. Undaunted, we shall continue to put 404 under one eye & 30082 under the other.....Smyrna represent!!!!
- former Tech Safety/LB Chris Reis has re-signed with the New Orleans Saints and his Super Bowl heroics have earned him a nice raise from last season. Get that chedda.....
- The Sporting News has named Josh(ua) Nesbitt one of its Top 10 Power Runners heading into this season. We certainly can't disagree & there are many linebackers & safeties throughout the ACC that would gladly add their vote. The lists are very strange, however, & feature some questionable choices, making their veracity a bit suspect. Ricky Dobbs at #8? Great player, but a power runner? Not. And Dion Lewis at #2? Same thing here; marvelous player but power runner he is not. If spring practice is any indication add Lucas Cox to that list....
- The AJC had a couple good pieces on Tech this week. Matt Winklejohn detailed the delicate balance between academics & sport in this piece while Tech beat writer Doug Roberson modeled our 2009 ACC championship rings. Bling Bling!
- Think WR Stephen Hill isn't a busy man these days? Think again. While teammate Roddy Jones gets all the press for his two-sport exploits Hill is also doing double duty as a long jumper on Tech's track team. Oh, Mr. Hill is quite adept at his other sport. Amazingly so. His leap of 25' 8 & 3/4" would have place him 9th at the most recent Olympics....Heady stuff for the sophomore.
- How much should a football writer really know about the intricacies of the game? A valid question & one that bears some thought. We agree with our man Spencer Hall @ EDSBS on this one: at least enough to be dangerous.....
- You get a stamp for winning the National Championship? Who knew? Might explain our bankrupt postal service......?
- Finally some actual football content courtesy of Chris Brown at SmartFootball. Some option basics & keys to success. All very valid & applicable to what we do every Saturday. We might use this as a template to judge how we played in games offensively this season. Our success with these points will be crucial in repeating as ACC Champs.....
Hope to see a good crowd at the scrimmage tomorrow morning. 9am at Bobby Dodd. Enjoy the weekend and watch for us around town: Dogwood Festival, Roller Derby, Sweetwater Festival, Cochon 555, & of course Freaknik. We'll make an appearance.....
