Isaiah Johnson......

Come on down, you're the next player in the "Meet the 2010 Signing Class Sweepstakes". The last of our 2010 recruits to enroll early, Johnson is a 6'2", 175 pound safety from Sandy Creek High (Calvin & Andrew Gardener also came to the Flats from Sandy Creek). A true ball-hawk, Johnson is the heir apparent to departing Morgan Burnett and will gain valuable experience this year going through spring practice

Highlights: actually, the ones we found are barely watchable, you'll have to trust us on this one...

Hash's take: always around the football; very instinctive. Likes to fly up in run support. Will need to bulk up & should end up playing around 200 pounds. Thin in the upper body right now. Will need to work on pass coverage skills but has the speed & talent to be a factor in that area. Will find the ball in the air. Classic free safety.

Player he reminds us of: former Miami Hurricane & current Patriot Brandon Meriweather. If we're to compare him to a Tech player it would be former safety Tavares Tillman.

  1. If he has better of an instinct towards run protection and the ball, he may be better off at strong safety as this position covers the tight end side of the ball and runs this direction... Just a minor point of order.

  2. It's a good point but his instincts IMHO are geared toward finding the ball; whether in the air or on the ground. As far as my point about run support, it was more that he's willing to be physical & tackle - he doesn't shy away from contact. Johnson's strength will be that he can play the pass as well as the run. Fred Holton, a fellow 2010 signee who we will preview later, is much more a classic strong safety type: big, physical, huge hitter. FWIW, Groh doesn't differentiate too much between strong & free safety as we'll be in a cover 2 most of the time where they will each have a deep half of the field. I see Johnson as more of a "centerfielder" type safety.
