Of Kiffin, Neilsen, Blizzards, & the SEC Championship Game....

Some random thoughts on things going on around College Football:
  • Who's the happiest guy about Tech going to the Orange Bowl?  It might be Allen Morris, I.M. '74, influential Tech booster, & Orange Bowl committee member.  Good to know we've got connections in Miami....
  • We joked about the NCAA investigating Tennessee's use of "hostesses" at player's high school games to aid in their recruiting efforts.  We still find it incredibly brash and bordering on stupid.  I'm sure Tennessee will plead the "they did it on their own/we didn't know about it" defense.  Not sure that one's gonna fly.  This makes 7 reported violations in a little over a year that Kiffin has been there; a Jackie Sherrill-esque pace.  The Vols are beginning to tread perilously close to the dreaded "lack of institutional control" line.  IF, and that's a big if, the NCAA finds them guilty of these violations, they will get hammered.  And hard.  This won't be a little slap on the wrist.  It's well established the only people who are allowed to recruit off-campus are coaches, no one else.  Fast & loose is one thing, fast & stupid another....
  • We surmised that ratings for the ACC Championship Game would be great considering the offensive shitfest it was up against in the Big 12 Championship game.  We were terribly wrong.  Abysmal doesn't begin to describe our rating.  The same as an average daily soap opera?  For that game.  With the alternative being an offensive abomination featuring 5 interceptions & about 1200 punts?  The American public sucks.  ASS!  In tomorrow's blog I'll be sure & tell you something you don't know....
  • In 2003 Iowa brought 48,000 fans to the Orange Bowl.  This year they expect to easily crest the 50,000 mark.  So expect a lot of black & gold in Miami.  But does this surprise anyone?  It's Iowa in JANUARY!  I'd get the fuck out, too.  Here's today's Iowa City weather forecast.  That's a high of a balmy 7 degrees with windchill at -9.  So Tech fans, it's not that they are any better or more devout fans than we are.  It's that they live in the frozen tundra....
Today (seriously) in Iowa City....
  • Since the Hawkeyes do travel so well we'd ask they bring along the following young ladies for our entertainment:

Hope to see you in Miami...

How come this never happens at my tailgate?

  • And finally, The Mayor was kind enough to breakdown the SEC Championship game for us.  Why did the mighty Tebow-led Gators lose?  One reason:
Idolatry is a bitch.  And gets you only one thing:

How many rednecks in Florida are currently scouring Ebay for vials of Tebow tears at $19.95 each?  Wait, that's a great idea.....

Coming later today: a look into Iowa's bowl practices & our 2009 All-ACC defensive line....

  1. Epic, fine sir.
on Ratings - They will remain crappy until we are relevent in the national title scene. Until we have an undefeated team of consequence, I fear this will be the norm. The fact that we are actively pursuing other teams verbal commitments with vigor and they are listening negates any negative press on this subject. This will turn in short order.
On SEC recruiting violations - I am guessing Tennessee will be brought up on recruiting violations and have the book slung at them, but it won't make much of a difference until a program or two more has issues. Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, LSU and Florida are all moving towards (if not already being well on their way) systematic loss of control of boosters and the like. NCAA will eventually have to do something much more drastic against them. Sanctions, forced fines or return of TV revenue, Death Penalty... Don't think we'll see the last one unless they sacrifice a mid major program to let them know they're serious...

Hope to see some Iowa State fans... Don't blame them for wanting to be warm for a few days.
